Exciting “Landings”: Clients Finding Jobs!

Ever since the beginning of the recession, some clients have questioned whether the economy is improving and whether it would be worth starting a job search. I always remain optimistic, and in June 2014, the economy gave us real numbers to support my optimism: There were 288,000 new jobs in that month and unemployment was at 6.1%, the lowest in many years. The number of new applications to receive unemployment insurance was also the lowest in a number of years.

Supporting those facts is the very good news that, in the month of June, four (4) Lansky Career Consultants clients got new jobs or upgraded their present ones. Here are their success stories:

Client Success #1: Networking

John, an Iraq vet with a degree in Communications and some background in Sales, did a great job  of networking and found a new sales position where he would use his communications background to do more relationship-oriented selling.  He was very pleased  with the  salary and benefit package he was offered.

Client Success #2: Identifying a Career Goal

Robert explored his skills, interests and values and determined that entrepreneurship was his career goal. He then met with his brother-in-law who owned a business and had previously mentioned the possibility of Bob joining him. By this time, his brother-in-law was looking forward to retiring and discussed the possibility of Bob joining the business and taking over within a few months when he retires. Bob determined that this could represent a great opportunity for him and he will start working with his brother-in-law next month.

Client Success #3: Changing Jobs Within the Company

Jane was bored with the market research career she had been pursuing over the last fourteen (14) years.  Aware that her company was planning a major reorganization, she worked on defining her own career goals while waiting patiently to see whether she would still have a job with her company after the reorg.  Great news!  She not only still has a job there, but she has new responsibilities that are more interesting to her.  The boss who made her life miserable was laid off (!) and was replaced by someone with whom Jane has a positive relationship!

Client Success #3: Negotiation

Lastly, Rebecca was frustrated with her position in a public health agency.  She liked the organization and its mission, but after ten (10) years, she felt ready for a management position.  She also wanted to limit the international travel she was doing because it was upsetting to her family.  As she articulated those needs, she gathered the courage to talk with her boss.  After some negotiation, her requests were granted!  She’s happy staying at her agency with new responsibilities and less travel.
